Essaouira is a coastal city situated in the Western Morocco, in the region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz. The origin name of Essaouira is Tassurt meaning the wall referring to the fortress walls surrounded the city. The city has a long history and some research says that it was occupied since the prehistoric times. And later it was a settlement for the Roman Empire, Portuguese, and France which struggle to maintain the control over the city
The Foundation of modern Essaouira was between 1760 and1770 by Mohammed III ineffort to increase exchanges with Europe.
The City has several worth historical monuments such as the City walls, the ramparts, the Harbour scala, The Genoese-built citadel by the harbour, the old Jewish quarter, and the Jewish cemetery in Essaouira.
The Medina of Essaouira or Magador is listed as a UNESCO world heritage as a fortified town of 18 Century. A famous music festival takes place each year in the city during the Month of June. The festival is called the Gnaoua Festival of World Music.
